The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized test used for admission to graduate business programs, such as MBA (Master of Business Administration) programs. It assesses analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English, and is intended to measure a candidate's ability to succeed in a business school environment.
GMAT Test Format
The GMAT is divided into four sections, with a total duration of about 3.5 hours (including optional breaks). These sections are:
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) (30 minutes):
This section requires you to analyze an argument and evaluate its reasoning. Your ability to structure your response and critique the argument's logic will be assessed.
Integrated Reasoning (IR) (30 minutes):
This section tests your ability to evaluate data presented in multiple formats (charts, graphs, tables, etc.) and from multiple sources.
Types of questions include:
Multi-source reasoning
Graphics interpretation
Two-part analysis
Table analysis
Quantitative Reasoning (62 minutes):
This section measures your ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills.
Two types of questions:
Problem Solving: Requires you to solve quantitative problems using algebra, geometry, and arithmetic.
Data Sufficiency: You need to determine whether the data provided is sufficient to answer the given problem.
Verbal Reasoning (65 minutes):
This section tests your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction skills.
Three types of questions:
Reading Comprehension: Analyze passages and answer questions based on them.
Critical Reasoning: Evaluate arguments and find assumptions or logical flaws.
Sentence Correction: Identify grammar and style errors and choose the correct version.
GMAT Scoring System
Total GMAT Score: The overall score ranges from 200 to 800. The Quantitative and Verbal sections contribute to this score, and each is scored on a scale of 6 to 51.
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): Scored on a scale of 0 to 6.
Integrated Reasoning: Scored on a scale of 1 to 8.
Most candidates aim for a score above 600 for competitive business school programs, with top-tier schools generally requiring scores in the 700s.
