The ankle joint is stabilized with the help of several ligaments like the Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL) and the Calcaneofibular Ligaments (CFL). When these ligaments are injured due to sports or daily activity, they cause an ankle sprain. Mostly the time an ankle sprain only needs proper rest of the joint, icing, compression, and elevation to decrease the pain and swelling. But when ankle sprains get more severe, the doctor can suggest ankle ligament surgery. It is usually a one-day procedure with a general anesthetic. Your doctor may conduct an initial arthroscopic examination of the ligament, prior to making a bigger incision close to the ligament.
